    Summer Tree Care in New Jersey: Heat, Drought, and Pest Damage Prevention

    Summer puts more stress on New Jersey trees than any other season. Heat waves push canopy temperatures past 90 degrees for days at a time, soil dries out faster than rain replaces it, lanternfly populations peak in late July and August, and afternoon thunderstorms drop branches that were already weakened by the dry stretch. Most trees that fail in fall storms started declining in summer. The single best thing you can do for tree health in NJ is deep watering during dry weeks, mulching the root zone, and addressing visible problems before August. Here's the actual playbook.

    This is not theoretical advice. It's what we tell every client who asks "what should I do for my trees this summer" during May estimate visits across all 11 counties we serve.

    What Heat and Drought Actually Do to NJ Trees

    Trees move water from roots to leaves through a process called transpiration. On hot dry days, the leaves lose water to the air faster than the roots can pull it from the soil. The tree responds by closing leaf pores (stomata), which slows photosynthesis and stalls growth. If the dry stretch goes long enough, the tree starts dropping leaves to reduce demand. By the time you see drought symptoms, the tree has been stressed for weeks.

    The cumulative effect across a single bad summer:

    Slowed growth and reduced energy reserves.

    Increased vulnerability to pest damage (stressed trees attract borers, lanternflies, and other opportunistic pests).

    Cracked bark and surface damage from sun exposure.

    Smaller-than-normal leaves, premature yellowing, early fall color in late August.

    Branch dieback at the top of the canopy.

    A tree that goes through one bad summer usually recovers. A tree that goes through two or three consecutive bad summers without intervention often doesn't.

    Deep Watering: The Single Highest-Value Summer Action

    Lawn sprinklers don't water trees. They water grass.

    Lawn sprinkler systems wet the top 1 to 2 inches of soil. That's the lawn root zone. Tree roots run 6 to 18 inches deep across a wide area, often extending past the drip line of the canopy. Sprinklers don't reach those roots.

    Real tree watering looks like this:

    Run for 1 to 2 hours per session at low pressure.

    Soaks the soil to 12 to 18 inches deep.

    Repeat every 7 to 10 days during dry stretches.

    Mature trees need 10 to 20 gallons of water per inch of trunk diameter per watering session. A 12-inch diameter oak might need 120 to 240 gallons during a single soak. That sounds like a lot. With a soaker hose at low pressure, it's an evening of just letting the hose run.

    When to water:

    During any stretch of 7+ days without significant rain (more than half an inch).

    When daytime temperatures stay above 85 for several consecutive days.

    When the soil 6 inches down feels dry to the touch.

    When you can see early stress signs (wilting leaves, dull color, premature yellowing).

    Newly planted trees (under 3 years in the ground) need water more frequently, even in average summer weather.

    Mulching: The Other High-Value Summer Action

    A 2 to 3 inch layer of wood chip mulch over the root zone does several things at once:

    Reduces soil temperature by 10 to 15 degrees during heat waves.

    Holds soil moisture longer between rain events.

    Suppresses turf grass that competes with tree roots.

    Slowly breaks down to add organic matter to the soil.

    Reduces compaction from foot traffic and lawnmower wheels.

    How to do it right:

    Spread mulch in a wide circle out to the drip line of the tree, or as far as your yard layout allows.

    Keep mulch 3 to 6 inches away from the trunk itself. Mulch piled against the bark (the "mulch volcano" you see at chain-store yard designs) traps moisture against the trunk and rots the bark over time.

    2 to 3 inches deep is the right thickness. More is wasted and can suffocate roots.

    Use natural wood chip mulch, not dyed mulch or rubber mulch. Wood chips break down into soil. Rubber doesn't.

    Refresh in late spring each year.

    We've seen properties with mature mulched trees outperform unmulched trees on the same block during drought summers. The visible difference is real.

    Pest Pressure Peaks in Summer

    Summer is when most tree pests do their damage in NJ.

    Spotted lanternfly populations explode in July and August. Adults swarm host trees, draining sap and producing sticky honeydew that drips on everything below. Maples, walnuts, and tree of heaven take the heaviest pressure. Treatment is most effective in early summer before populations peak.

    Emerald ash borer larvae feed actively under bark from May through August. The damage occurring this summer shows up as canopy thinning next spring. Ash trees that look fine in June can be visibly declining by September.

    Twolined chestnut borer attacks stressed oaks during summer dry stretches. Hot dry conditions weaken oaks. The borer arrives. Decline accelerates.

    Spongy moth caterpillars (formerly gypsy moth) defoliate oaks in late May and June. A second flush of leaves in midsummer recovers some canopy, but the energy cost is substantial.

    Bagworms appear on conifers in summer. Small bag-shaped cocoons hanging from spruce, juniper, and arborvitae branches. Treatment is most effective when the larvae are young in early to mid-summer.

    The pattern across all of these: stress during summer accelerates pest pressure, which accelerates further stress. Breaking the cycle early matters.

    What Summer Pruning Should and Shouldn't Do

    Summer is fine for some pruning work, risky for others.

    What's appropriate:

    Light shaping and clearance work (branches against the house, over the driveway, blocking gutters).

    Removal of clearly dead branches (dead wood doesn't care about season).

    Cleanup after thunderstorm damage.

    Reduction cuts on overgrown summer growth on flowering ornamentals.

    What's risky:

    Major structural pruning of healthy oaks, especially in NJ's oak wilt window through July.

    Heavy crown reduction during hot dry weather (the tree is already stressed).

    Anything on a tree already showing decline (cuts add stress to a tree that doesn't have margin).

    If you have a tree showing summer stress, the right move is usually water and mulch, not pruning. Wait until late fall or winter for any major work.

    Storm Damage Risk Builds Through Summer

    NJ thunderstorm season runs heavily from late June through early September. Tropical remnants occasionally park over the region in August and September. Each storm event is a stress test on every tree on your property.

    Trees most likely to fail in summer storms:

    Oaks with heavy dead wood in the upper canopy.

    Maples with included bark unions (tight V-shaped joins where two large limbs meet).

    Ash trees in active borer decline.

    Trees with new or worsening lean.

    Any tree that's lost 30 percent or more of its canopy density compared to recent years.

    Trees previously topped or aggressively pruned (the regrowth is structurally weak and breaks easily under load).

    The trees that come down in late August thunderstorms are almost always trees that showed signs in June and July. The summer is when problems become visible. Acting in summer prevents damage in September.

    When to Call a Pro During Summer

    Some situations should not wait.

    A tree leaning more than it used to, especially after a heavy rain or thunderstorm.

    Heavy dead wood visible at the top of a tree near a structure.

    A large limb hanging by torn fiber after a storm.

    Mushrooms or fungal growth at the base of a tree (signals internal decay).

    Sudden canopy collapse on one side of the tree.

    Visible cracks in the trunk you didn't notice before.

    These are not "wait until fall" issues. They're "get it looked at this week" issues. Summer is also when most homeowners are home, kids are out of school, and the property is in active use. A failure during peak summer use puts more people in harm's way than the same failure in November.

    A Pre-Pool-Season Tree Check

    This one comes up every year. Pool gets installed or opened. The trees around the deck looked fine in March. By July, the homeowner is noticing branches over the pool, mulch issues, falling leaves and acorns, and the occasional bee from a hidden hive.

    Before pool season hits in earnest, walk the property:

    Are any branches close enough to the pool deck that storm damage could land them in the water?

    Are there overhanging branches dropping leaves, sap, or seeds onto the deck?

    Are there hazardous trees within falling distance of the pool, equipment shed, or pool house?

    Are there any honeybee or wasp nests in nearby trees?

    Catching these issues in May and June makes the rest of pool season easier. We've done a lot of late-spring trim and remove jobs around pools across north Jersey. The conversation in June is much friendlier than the conversation in August after a branch dropped on the cover.

    Quick reference for your property this summer:

    Water deeply every 7 to 10 days during dry stretches. Soaker hose at the drip line.

    Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep, not against the trunk.

    Walk the property monthly. Look for canopy changes, bark issues, new leans, fungal growth.

    Document anything that looks off with photos.

    Address visible hazards before storm season peaks.

    Watch ash trees for borer signs (top-down dieback, woodpecker activity).

    Watch oaks for wilt symptoms (sudden bronze leaves, dropping leaves while green).

    Watch maples and walnuts for lanternfly damage.
