Tree Lopping in North NJ
When large branches need to come off to reduce weight, lower risk, or restore balance, our lopping crew handles it safely. Call (973) 343-6868.
Tree lopping is what you need when specific large branches are creating a problem but the tree itself does not need to come down. Maybe a heavy limb is leaning over your garage. Maybe the tree grew lopsided after a storm took out one side. Maybe the canopy got so heavy on one side that the trunk is starting to lean. Lopping removes that weight, corrects the imbalance, and brings the risk back under control. Amazing Tree Services handles tree lopping across North NJ for properties where full removal is not the answer. Tree lopping is part of our full tree service for homeowners across North NJ.
When You Need Tree Lopping
Lopping is the right choice when a tree has one or more large branches causing a specific problem. Overloaded canopies that lean toward a structure. Heavy limbs that cracked during a storm but did not fully break. Branches that have grown into power lines or neighboring properties.
The key difference between lopping and trimming is size. Trimming targets smaller growth for clearance and appearance. Lopping removes large, heavy sections that change the tree's weight distribution. It takes more planning, heavier equipment, and experience to do it without damaging the tree.
Done poorly, lopping creates open wounds that invite disease and weaken the trunk. Done correctly, it saves the tree and solves the problem.
Our Tree Lopping Process
We assess the tree and identify which branches need to come off. We plan cuts that reduce weight and restore balance without removing so much that the tree goes into stress.
For large limbs, we use rigging to lower sections with control. Nothing drops free onto your property. Our crew sections each branch at calculated points so the remaining wood heals cleanly. After the work is done, we chip and haul all debris.
What Affects a Tree Lopping Job
Lopping depends on the size of the branches being removed, the height of the cuts, and how close the work is to structures or power lines. Larger branches near buildings require more rigging and more time.

Tree Lopping FAQ
What is the difference between tree lopping and tree trimming?
Tree lopping is the removal of larger sections of a tree, often whole branches or the upper portion of the canopy, to reduce its size or address structural problems. Tree trimming is the lighter shaping work that keeps branches clear of structures and maintains a tree's natural form. Lopping is the heavier of the two and gets used when a tree is overgrown, leaning toward a structure, or partially storm-damaged. We assess each tree before recommending lopping versus trimming.
When does a tree need to be lopped instead of removed entirely?
Lopping is the right call when the tree is structurally sound at the trunk and lower canopy but the upper sections are dead, dangerous, or growing into something they shouldn't (a roof, power lines, a neighbor's property). Removing the problem sections preserves the tree while eliminating the hazard. If the trunk or root system is compromised, removal is usually the safer answer.
How long does a typical tree lopping job take?
Most residential lopping jobs are completed in a single visit, typically two to five hours depending on the number of sections to remove and access to the canopy. Larger trees with multiple sections may take a full day. Crane work for upper canopy lopping on tall trees adds to the time but speeds up the actual cutting.
Will lopping hurt the tree?
Properly executed lopping does not hurt a healthy tree. The cuts heal cleanly when made at the right collar location, and the tree continues its growth pattern with the problem sections gone. Improper lopping (topping, leaving stubs, removing too much canopy at once) does damage and shortens the tree's life. We follow species-specific lopping practices and never remove more than the tree can recover from in a single growing season.
Do you offer lopping for emergency storm damage?
Yes. After major storms, partially split or damaged sections often need to come down quickly even if the rest of the tree is salvageable. Emergency lopping prevents the damaged section from failing further and dropping unpredictably. We respond to storm damage calls across our service area and can typically be on site quickly.
